Repair or Replace?

The most common causes cost nothing to fix. Suspension rods, springs, and shock absorbers are inexpensive parts and a reasonable weekend repair on most machines. A worn drum bearing is the exception: it usually means partially disassembling the outer tub, and on a machine past 8–10 years, the labor alone often costs more than the machine is worth. In that case, replacement is usually the better call.

Work through the load balance and leveling checks next. Removed shipping bolts fix one specific cause; they don't rule out an uneven load or an unlevel floor, which are just as common.

Can a washing machine on an upper floor shake more than one on a concrete slab?

Yes. Wood-framed floors flex more than a concrete slab, which can make normal vibration feel and sound worse even when the machine itself is working correctly.

How do I know if it's the suspension or the drum bearing?

Suspension problems usually show up as banging or heavy rocking during spin. A bearing problem typically sounds like a grinding or rumbling noise that gets louder as spin speed increases, independent of how balanced the load is.

Will overloading the machine just once cause lasting damage?

A single overloaded cycle is unlikely to cause damage on its own, but doing it regularly accelerates wear on the suspension components and the drive system over time.

  1. Redistribute the load by hand, or if it's a single bulky item like a comforter or a pair of sneakers, add a towel or two to balance the drum, then restart the cycle.
  2. Adjust the leveling feet (usually locked with a nut) until the bubble level reads flat in both directions, then re-tighten the locking nuts against the cabinet base.
  3. If you recently had the machine delivered, locate and remove any shipping bolts per the manufacturer's instructions: running the machine with them still in place can damage the suspension within a few cycles.
  4. If the machine is level and the load is balanced but shaking persists, especially at higher spin speeds, check the suspension rods or springs (top-load) or shock absorbers (front-load) by hand for looseness, visible wear, or a broken mount.
  5. A grinding or rumbling noise that gets louder as spin speed increases, rather than a rhythmic banging, usually points to a worn drum bearing rather than the suspension.
