Whirlpool Dishwasher Error Code F9E1

F9E1 is Whirlpool’s Long Drain code. It’s most often a dirty filter, a kinked hose, or oversudsing, not a failed pump.

Meaning

F9E1 is Whirlpool’s Long Drain code: the dishwasher took longer than expected to pump out water. Whirlpool’s own troubleshooting starts with the filter and the drain hose, then checks a connected garbage disposer’s knockout plug before ever pointing at the drain pump. Oversudsing from regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent is called out as a common trigger too.

Possible causes

No cause is certain until it has been checked on the appliance.

Tools needed

First checks

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Take out the lower rack and lift out the filter assembly. Separate the coarse and fine parts, then rinse both under hot running water until the mesh is clear against the light.
  2. Wipe out the sump underneath the filter. Glass chips, seeds, and labels collect there where you cannot see them.
  3. Follow the drain hose from the back of the unit to the sink cabinet. Look for kinks, crushed sections, and anything resting on it, and check where it passes through the cabinet wall.
  4. If the dishwasher drains into a garbage disposer, confirm the knockout plug was punched out at installation. A plug left in place means the dishwasher has never been able to drain, and this is the classic new-install fault.
  5. Run the disposer for a few seconds to clear its inlet.
  6. If your model uses an air gap on the sink deck, lift the cap and clear the debris inside.
  7. Open the door and look for foam. Suds slow a drain enough to trip a Long Drain code on their own.
  8. Cut power 30 seconds, restore, then run a cycle and watch the sump empty at the end.
