How to Maintain a Dishwasher

How to Maintain a Dishwasher

Filters, spray arms, and gaskets: three monthly checks for spotless dishes.

Difficulty
Beginner

A simple monthly maintenance routine prevents poor cleaning, odors, and leaks. No tools are needed for the basics.

Steps

  1. Remove the lower rack and unscrew the filter at the bottom of the tub.
  2. Rinse the filter under hot water with a soft brush.
  3. Unclip the spray arms and clear each nozzle with a toothpick.
  4. Wipe the door gasket, including the folds, with a vinegar-dampened cloth.
  5. Run a hot empty cycle with a cup of white vinegar.

Warnings

  • Don't use an abrasive scrubber on the door gasket.

Maintenance tips

  • Refill the rinse aid salt as soon as the indicator light comes on, even with 'all-in-one' tablets.

Before you start

Unplug the appliance, shut off the water supply if relevant, and stop immediately if you smell burning. If in doubt, call a qualified professional.
