Meaning

AF stands for Airflow Fault. The dryer’s sensors detected that air isn’t moving through the exhaust system the way it should, and a clogged lint screen or blocked vent hose is behind nearly every case.

The information provided here is a diagnostic aid and does not replace the intervention of a qualified professional.

Possible causes

No cause is certain until it has been checked on the appliance.

Tools needed

First checks

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Clean the lint screen and reseat it. It has to sit flush. A screen left standing proud lets lint bypass straight into the blower housing.
  2. Vacuum the screen housing as deep as the crevice tool will go.
  3. Pull the dryer forward and disconnect the vent at the back.
  4. Brush out the hose and the wall duct, then vacuum the debris you have loosened rather than pushing it further along.
  5. If the hose is foil or plastic accordion, replace it with rigid or semi-rigid metal. Every ridge in accordion hose holds lint, and it is the most common reason AF comes straight back.
  6. Check the outside hood. The flap should open when the dryer runs and fall shut when it stops.
  7. Reconnect with foil tape rather than screws. Screw tips project into the duct and catch lint.
  8. Run a timed dry and confirm strong warm air at the exterior hood.
