Step-by-step diagnosis

Unplug the washer and wait for the water to cool.
Remove the rear panel to reach the heating element under the tub.
Photograph the connections before pulling the terminals. They are not interchangeable.
Measure resistance across the two element terminals. A washer element usually falls between 20 and 40 ohms. Infinite means it has gone open circuit.
Now measure between one terminal and the metal chassis. Any low reading means the element is leaking to earth, and it has to be replaced regardless of what the first measurement said.
Check the safety thermostat for continuity when cold. If it does not pass, it has tripped, and the reason it tripped matters more than the thermostat itself.
