Step-by-step diagnosis

Unplug the washer and close the water supply. Wait until the tub is empty and the water has cooled.
Remove the rear panel to reach the tub. Photograph the wiring before you touch anything.
Find the sensor: a small cylindrical body pushed into the tub, usually near the heating element, with a two-wire connector.
Unplug the connector and look at it under a flashlight. Green or white deposits mean corrosion, a blackened wire means it has been running hot.
Measure resistance across the two sensor terminals with the machine cold. Expect somewhere in the region of 10 to 15 kilohms at room temperature. Zero or infinite condemns the part.
Warm the sensor in your hand or a glass of warm water with the meter still connected. The reading has to fall steadily. If it does not move, the sensor is dead.
