SUD (also shown as 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS, or 5Ud5 depending on the model) means the washer’s sensors picked up more suds than the cycle can handle. It pauses to let the foam settle, then continues automatically. Samsung doesn’t treat this as a fault that needs service, it’s almost always a detergent problem.
Samsung Washer Error Code SUD (Excess Suds)
SUD means the washer detected too many suds and paused the cycle. It’s a detergent issue, not a mechanical fault.
Meaning
Possible causes
No cause is certain until it has been checked on the appliance.
- Very likely Using regular (non-HE) detergent in a high-efficiency washer
- Likely Using too much HE detergent for the load size or soil level
- Possible Adding extra detergent mid-cycle on top of the auto-dispensed amount
First checks
- Check the detergent bottle for the HE (High Efficiency) symbol. Regular detergent foams far more than a Samsung washer's sensors expect.
- Reduce the amount of detergent used. Most manufacturers recommend far less than the cap's fill line suggests for HE machines.
- Let the current cycle finish on its own. The pause is part of the washer's normal response, not a stopped cycle.
What not to do
- Opening the door or interrupting the cycle when SUD appears. The washer is handling it automatically, and interrupting just restarts the wait.
- Assuming a mechanical fault and calling for service before checking the detergent type first.
An error code varies by brand
The same code can have a different meaning depending on the brand and model. Always check your appliance's manual before acting.
