Samsung Washer Error Code SUD (Excess Suds)

SUD means the washer detected too many suds and paused the cycle. It’s a detergent issue, not a mechanical fault.

Meaning

SUD (also shown as 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS, or 5Ud5 depending on the model) means the washer’s sensors picked up more suds than the cycle can handle. It pauses to let the foam settle, then continues automatically. Samsung doesn’t treat this as a fault that needs service, it’s almost always a detergent problem.

Possible causes

No cause is certain until it has been checked on the appliance.

Tools needed

First checks

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Let the washer finish. It pauses and resumes on its own once the foam settles, and that pause is the machine working rather than a stopped cycle.
  2. Check the detergent bottle for the HE symbol while you wait.
  3. Look at your dose. For a normal load in a Samsung HE drum you need far less than the cap line suggests, often around a third of it.
  4. If your model auto-dispenses, check you have not also been adding detergent to the drum by hand. Doubling up is a common cause and it is easy to do without noticing.
  5. Run an extra rinse with no detergent once the cycle ends.
  6. Halve the dose on the next load and see whether SUD comes back.

When to call a professional

If the simple checks turned up nothing, if the repair involves electricity, gas, or the sealed refrigerant system, or if you have any doubt at all: stop there and hand the appliance over to a qualified technician.
