How to Defrost a Freezer

More than 3 mm of frost? Time to defrost. A safe method — no poking, no scraping.

Frost buildup insulates the walls and drives up energy use. A full defrost should always be done gently — never with a sharp object.

Steps

  1. Move the food into a cooler box.
  2. Unplug the freezer and prop the door open.
  3. Lay towels on the floor and place a pot of hot water inside to speed up the melt.
  4. Pull off the ice sheets by hand as they loosen.
  5. Dry the interior, plug it back in, and wait for it to reach temperature before restocking.

Warnings

  • Never use a knife, screwdriver, or hair dryer inside the freezer — you risk puncturing the refrigerant circuit.

Maintenance tips

  • Check the door seal after defrosting — a worn seal will bring the frost back within weeks.

Before you start

Unplug the appliance, shut off the water supply if relevant, and stop immediately if you smell burning. If in doubt, call a qualified professional.
