LG Washer Error Code LE (Motor Locked)

LE means the motor overloaded and locked itself out. LG’s fix is a 30-minute cooldown, not a repair, unless it keeps coming back.

Risk
Moderate

Meaning

LE appears when LG’s washer detects the motor is overloaded and has locked to protect itself. LG’s own guidance is to let the machine sit for 30 minutes to cool down, then restart the cycle. It’s a protective shutdown first, not automatically a sign of a failed motor.

Possible causes

No cause is certain until it has been checked on the appliance.

Tools needed

First checks

Step-by-step diagnosis

  1. Power the washer off and leave it for a full 30 minutes. This looks like doing nothing, but the motor's thermal protection needs that long to reset, and restarting early just re-trips it.
  2. While you wait, take the load out and weigh it in your hands. Wet bedding and rugs weigh far more than they look, and they are what usually causes this.
  3. Check the drum turns freely by hand, with no scraping and nothing wedged between drum and gasket.
  4. After the full 30 minutes, run a spin-only cycle on an empty drum and listen for a smooth ramp-up.
  5. If that runs clean, wash a normal half load and see whether LE returns.
  6. Note how many cycles ran back to back before the code appeared. Several heavy loads in a row will overheat a motor that is otherwise fine.

The same code can have a different meaning depending on the brand and model. Always check your appliance's manual before acting.

When to call a professional

If the simple checks turned up nothing, if the repair involves electricity, gas, or the sealed refrigerant system, or if you have any doubt at all: stop there and hand the appliance over to a qualified technician.
