How to Clean a Refrigerator Door Seal

A clean, supple door seal means stable cooling and a lower electricity bill.

The door seal keeps cold air in. Once it’s dirty or warped, warm air gets in, frost builds up on the evaporator, and the compressor works harder than it should.

Steps

  1. Clean the seal with soapy water, including the folds.
  2. Dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth.
  3. Test the seal: close the door on a sheet of paper and pull — it should resist.
  4. Repeat the test all the way around the door.

Warnings

  • No bleach or solvents — they make the rubber stiff and brittle.

Maintenance tips

  • If the seal stays dented after a finger press, it needs replacing — the part often snaps in without tools.

Before you start

Unplug the appliance, shut off the water supply if relevant, and stop immediately if you smell burning. If in doubt, call a qualified professional.
