How to Clean a Washing Machine Drain Filter

How to Clean a Washing Machine Drain Filter

A ten-minute job that prevents half of all drain-related breakdowns.

Difficulty
Beginner

The drain filter traps lint and small objects before they reach the pump. When it’s clogged, it causes drain blockages, odors, and stalled cycles. Clean it every two to three months.

Steps

  1. Unplug the washer and shut off the water supply.
  2. Open the small door at the bottom front.
  3. Drain the residual water using the emergency hose, or slowly unscrew the filter over a basin.
  4. Remove the filter, clear out lint and objects, and rinse it under clean water.
  5. Check the pump impeller visible in the housing.
  6. Screw the filter back in fully and run a short cycle to check for leaks.

Warnings

  • Water always drains out when you open the door: protect the floor first.
  • Never force a stuck filter; turn it in small increments instead.

Maintenance tips

  • Empty pockets before washing: coins and keys usually end up in the filter.

Before you start

Unplug the appliance, shut off the water supply if relevant, and stop immediately if you smell burning. If in doubt, call a qualified professional.
