How to Clean a Washing Machine Drain Filter
A ten-minute job that prevents half of all drain-related breakdowns.
Steps
- Unplug the washer and shut off the water supply.
- Open the small door at the bottom front.
- Drain the residual water using the emergency hose, or slowly unscrew the filter over a basin.
- Remove the filter, clear out lint and objects, and rinse it under clean water.
- Check the pump impeller visible in the housing.
- Screw the filter back in fully and run a short cycle to check for leaks.
Warnings
- Water always drains out when you open the door: protect the floor first.
- Never force a stuck filter; turn it in small increments instead.
Maintenance tips
- Empty pockets before washing: coins and keys usually end up in the filter.
